From Dead-Ends to Dialogue: Third Workshop on GenAI & Design Research
DIS '25 Companion, July 5–9, 2025, Funchal, Portugal
This workshop focuses on 'stopsigns'—the blockages that impede progress in design research with GenAI. These manifest as both semantic barriers (political, social, or mental frameworks) and pragmatic hurdles (technical limitations or implementation challenges). Through analysis of real cases and hands-on activities, we'll develop strategies for moving beyond these obstacles while acknowledging their legitimate concerns. Our goal is to foster more thoughtful integration of GenAI in design research and practice.
We warmly welcome returning participants from our previous workshops, as well as newcomers looking to join this growing community of GenAI design researchers. The diverse mix of experiences enriches our collective exploration of this rapidly evolving field.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) dominates contemporary discourse—it's the zeitgeist, the perpetual headline, the topic that's transformed every coffee break into an impromptu tech summit. Yet while theoretical discussions abound, design researchers often get stuck on both "semantic stopsigns"—oversimplified narratives that halt deeper inquiry—and practical barriers that stall real-world progress. From blanket rejections to implementation hurdles, these challenges prevent thoughtful integration of GenAI in design research.
